[EN] On the 6th
of December Finland, our neighbor country, was celebrating its Independence
Day. Meanwhile the Saint Petersburg fans of To/Die/For were looking forward to
seeing the concert of their idols. In such an original way all the fans of
To/Die/For and all the people fascinated for the Finnish culture were invited to
come and spend time together. At 7 p.m. the club started welcoming its guests.
The air was buzzing with anticipation that night: some of the concert-goers
were already dancing to the music of Finnish bands that was playing in the
club, singing, or sharing their hopes about the concert. Every now and then one
of the To/Die/For band members passed through the club but no one was trying to
stop the musicians to ask for a photo or an autograph.
The concert
soon began with Put/In/Cheese kicking off the evening as the first supporting
band. They are formed of three members of different Saint Petersburg groups:
Ellis Sylvain (Striplette), Sergey Abramkin (Chainsaw Party) and
Artem Lun (Heartbreak Suicide). The
experimental band formed just a few weeks before the concert with the idea of
performing songs in acoustics. Despite the young age of the project the
performance was perfect. The band played songs of the Striplette’s repertoire and several cover versions of compositions written by other
artists - the most famous of which was Rebel Yell. The audience received the
performance with pleasure.
16 Bomb who made the trip specially from Moscow were
playing second. Unfortunately, the audience's eagerness to see To/Die/For led
some fans to start chanting their name.
16 Bomb’s vocalist should be given a great tribute for taking the whole
situation with humor. The band played six songs including a cover version of
Negative’s “The Moment of our Love”. By the end of the performance the spectators’ attitude had
changed from impatience to an interest that heard the audience demanding an
encore.
A little time passed for the technicians to prepare
the stage before the To/Die/For members came out. It felt like this concert
held a special importance to each of them and the band was preparing for it.
The entrance of the vocalist Jape Perätalo left a magical impression: he was sincere
and emotional at the same time. He entered the stage with his eyes closed,
bowed to the public and
greeted everybody with words “Dobro Pozhalovat’ ” (“Welcome!” in Russian), then the band promptly
launched into “Veiled”.
Something incredible was also happening in the
audience hall: all the attendees formed a harmonious choir. Everything that was
playing on the stage was replicated by the fans. It was clear that many of the
audience were long time fans who had been waiting for this performance with
great anticipation. They behaved very respectfully and as a result the
performance and friendly atmosphere was enjoyed by all.
As it had been previously announced in an interview
given to one of the Russian music portals, the band mostly played songs from
their earlier albums. The album “Samsara” which was released in 2011 referring to its
sound is considered by the band to be its most uncharacteristic work. To/Die/For
also introduced their new song “Screaming Birds”. The harmonious choir consisting of the audience hall stayed silent for
a while, but judging by the reaction of the spectators, the song awakened an
echo in their hearts.
If one watches the band’s concert photos,
including the recent performance in Saint Petersburg, one thing in particular
stands out: lots and lots of photos represent the musicians playing with their
eyes closed. And this is not just an isolated occasion. There are bands who are
famous and know how to perform, but who play by the force of the habit.
To/Die/For doesn’t meet this description: being formed in 1999 the band is still going
strong and clearly enjoy playing their music. The musicians always play
wholeheartedly, entirely devoting themselves to the audience, getting lost in
the stream of sound, living through the transfusion of joy and sadness during the
concert. This must definitely be this true devotion, the whole dedication to
music that attracts and inspires the band’s followers. After seeing the action live it’s nearly impossible not to develop a tremendous respect towards the five
people performing on the stage or not to be carried away by their music.
To/Die/For
concluded the concert by playing a cover-version of Sandra’s song “In The Heat Of The Night”. The audience demanded an encore and “Loveless” became the final of the night. It
could be seen that everybody who was in the club at that moment was savoring
every second of the last composition. Finalizing the show, To/Die/For who
seemed to be in quite a good mood, bowed to the audience. Before leaving the
stage for the last time the musicians invited everybody to come to them in
several minutes for a chat, a photo or an autograph.
To/Die/For
treated everyone who came to them very respectful and graciously. Nobody was
left without their attention, their autographs or a photo. In a while after the
concert everybody could see warm regards on the Facebook account of Jape Perätalo, where he called everybody “my brothers and sisters”.
